I’ll let you into a secret: I’ve never loved the dotmailer interface. This may seem a strange thing for me to say considering how famed dotmailer is for its ease of use. But for me it was too full of inconsistencies; these were no one’s fault – they crept in due to our pace of change.
But they were there. Buttons of different styles that seemed like a good idea at the time. Tabs that had morphed as the years went by. Icons that were added – necessarily – ad hoc.
And we admit it: sometimes, switching between features in dotmailer felt like switching between applications. Something else you had to learn, more idiosyncrasies to remember.
Well, if you’ve logged into your dotmailer account today, you’ll have seen things look a little different. It’s not just that we’ve started writing dotmailer without the uppercase ‘M’, or that we have a new logo – we’ve redesigned the application, too.
High time for a change
dotmailer, as an application, a service and as a company, is evolving. We’re getting bigger all the time. Our clients are getting bigger. We’re no longer ‘just’ an email service provider – we’re here to help you automate your online marketing.
With all this change, now felt like the right time to smarten ourselves up. Out with the inconsistencies, and in with a design that we could be proud of.
Consistency is king
Our primary aim – although perhaps the one that will be least noticeable initially – was to make dotmailer’s interface consistent. Consistency brings with it an ease of use that you can’t get any other way.
We took a long, hard look at many, many pages and asked ourselves, “How can we make this feel more like dotmailer?” This has led us to changing 70 tabs and over 1,000 buttons on over 400 pages. Some of us will never look at a button the same way again.
Simple is beautiful
The change that probably is most noticeable is the header: it’s tidier, leaner and simpler. It gives you more real estate for the important tasks – such as creating campaigns and designing programs – but still lets you jump from section to section in a click.
We’ve also simplified the dashboard, and ditched the things you just weren’t using. Instead, you now have easy ways to create campaigns and programs, as well as at-a-glance account reporting for the last 30 days.
It’s not just the aesthetics we’ve changed. Every user now has access to the new Help panel; a fully context-aware way to get assistance on whatever it is you’re doing. It’ll offer up Knowledge Base articles based on where you are, or enable you to chat directly to our service desk. If you’d rather send an email to our support team instead, it’ll allow you to do that too. And lastly, because we know that sometimes you just need to *talk* to someone, it shows our low rate phone number.
dotmailer at heart
Change is good, but change can also be hard. Which is why the application is, at heart, still dotmailer. The way you create a campaign is the same. The reporting works as it always has. One of our aims was to make sure no one had to ‘relearn’ dotmailer to do their job, and we’ve tried hard not to make changes just because we could.
