Google Rolls Out A Little Blue Arrow

Following the launch of Google Instant recently, Google has rolled out another change to the appearance of web searches with the addition of a little blue arrow that sits next to the top organic ranking in searches. You can then use your keyboard arrow keys to move between rankings and then the enter key to visit the site, all without leaving your keyboard!

As the blog post announcing the feature explains:

“First, we’ve introduced keyboard navigation to help you explore your Instant search results using just your keyboard, with no need for a mouse or touchpad. We’re also making Instant available within many of the search features in the left panel of the results page including Videos, News, Books, Blogs, Updates and Discussions.”

There’s also a useful video that explains the features in more detail:

This is clearly another interesting introduction from Google. With the foothold we all know they hold over the search industry, I am sure we will see many more new features like this coming over the coming months.

Personally, I feel this is just another feature introduced to increase the ever growing Google revenue stream. And who can blame them?

Issues for marketers?

It remains to be seen whether this move will have an impact on SEO or SEM. Because the arrow clearly identifies the beginning of organic rankings, it could be that current paid search advertisers will start to question their existing CPC structure and make adjustments to ensure they remain at the top of the pack for their chosen terms.

What do you think of the new feature?
