Search + Your World: A Quick Overview

January has been busy all round with Google releasing some game-changing algorithm updates so far. The most significant is ‘Search + your world’ which brings personalisation to the forefront of SERPS.

This brings your personal world into your search results, which according to Google, makes them far more relevant to you.

The three integrated features are: personal results, profiles in search and people and pages. Together this equals search plus your world.

It shows influential people in the field

The first result is something we’d previously shared

Google offers 300 personal results

When logged in to my Google+ account, results of people within my circles who had also shared anything in relation to ‘SEO’ also shows.  This is currently being rolled out to those searching within google.com – the same search within google.co.uk would show very different results.

There are two key messages for businesses trading online:

  • Firstly, ensure you and your brand ambassadors have active Google + profiles, integrating into as many different circles as possible, in order to appear in as many SERP results as possible.
  • And secondly, give the Google +1 button plenty of exposure on your website to ensure your site is ‘plussed’ by as wide an audience as possible.

Google has also announced 30 other improvements to the algorithm with corresponding code names (such as Panda and Caffeine) to make them easier to remember. SEOMoz documents these

In summary, this includes better-selected sitelinks (Megasitelinks), more rich snippets, faster mobile browsing (called skip redirect), safer searching, better lyrics results (Contra), increased accuracy in country-restricted searches (Greencr) plus many others.

So Google has definitely been busy keeping us on our toes and seems like it could be a tatse of things to come.  One thing for sure is that the search engine results will never be the same again.
